In 2025, fleet leaders cited driver privacy concerns as a barrier to dash cam adoption; the 2026 driver survey found that 77% believe benefits of fleet safety tools outweigh privacy or resistance concerns
ST. LOUIS — Sept. 1, 2026 — A new survey of 267 commercial fleet professionals from Linxup, a GPS fleet tracking and safety technology company serving small- and mid-sized businesses, found that nearly half (44%) of field service professionals say they or a coworker have been involved in an accident where dash cam footage or GPS tracking worked in their favor during an insurance claim or legal dispute. The findings suggest drivers increasingly view dash cams and GPS as protection, with safety culture influencing retention, customer trust and day-to-day confidence.

The data shows that many drivers value fleet safety technology for the protection it provides and the accidents it prevents. When asked what would make the biggest difference in their day-to-day work, 29% of drivers ranked "protection if something goes wrong" as their top choice, followed by 27% who chose "fewer accidents” and 26% who said “knowing their company has their back.”
"Safety technology is often viewed through the lens of reducing accidents, but drivers are telling us they value technology that can provide an objective record when something goes wrong," said Naeem Bari, founder and chief product officer at Linxup. "Fleet drivers want greater confidence every time they get behind the wheel; that isn’t and shouldn’t be an impossible ask. Our findings show that protection, accountability, and knowing your company has your back all matter to today's workforce, reinforcing that safety programs work best when technology is positioned as a tool that supports employees, not just company operations.”
The research found the impact of fleet safety extends well beyond driver behavior. More than three-quarters (76%) of respondents said how their employer approaches safety influences their decision to stay with a company, while 61% said customers have mentioned their company's safety practices as a reason for doing business with them. Additionally, 42% reported their employer has become more serious about safety over the past year, highlighting safety's growing role in both employee retention and customer confidence.
The survey also found that organizations with formal safety programs see stronger engagement with safety initiatives. Respondents at companies with formal programs reported higher adoption of GPS tracking (80%) and dash cameras (68%) and were more likely to say safety makes them want to stay with their employer compared to those without a formal safety program (49% compared to 38%). Those with a formal safety program also reported more consistent driver feedback and proactive monitoring of accidents and near misses than those at organizations with informal or no safety programs.
Additional key findings from the survey include:
-
Women were even more likely than men to view fleet safety technology positively. More than 91% of women agreed the benefits of fleet safety tools outweigh privacy or driver resistance concerns, compared to 75% of men. Women were also significantly more likely to say "protection if something goes wrong" would make the biggest difference in their day-to-day work (41% vs. 28%).
-
Safety incentives matter. Eighty-two percent of respondents say tying pay or bonuses to safety scores would motivate them to improve their driving performance, with cash bonuses ranking as the top motivator.
-
Operational pressures remain a challenge. Nearly three-quarters (73%) say real-world job demands sometimes make it difficult to drive efficiently, while 45% say those pressures can make it difficult to consistently follow safe driving practices and only 23% say management only changes safety rules after an incident occurs.
-
Formal safety programs strengthen outcomes. Companies with formal safety programs report higher adoption of GPS tracking and dash cameras, stronger employee retention, more consistent driver feedback and more proactive risk monitoring than organizations without formal programs.
-
Drivers want communication, not just technology. More than 72% say their employer has explained how GPS tracking or dash cameras affect insurance coverage, reinforcing the importance of transparency around fleet safety tools.
Compared with Linxup's 2025 fleet safety research, this year's survey highlights greater alignment between managers and drivers on the value of fleet safety technology. While last year's survey found fleet leaders believed driver privacy concerns were a significant barrier to dash cam adoption, this year's driver survey found that 77% believe the benefits of fleet safety tools outweigh privacy or resistance concerns.
The Linxup fleet safety industry survey was conducted in June 2026 among 267 field service professionals across commercial fleets in HVAC, electrical, landscaping, plumbing and other field service industries.
